Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Prize

Call for entries for the Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Prize for History of Science, Humanities, Knowledge and University History

In 2013, Gewina established the Gewina-Descartes-Huygens Thesis Prize for Science and University History. This prize will be awarded for the fifth time during the celebration of Gewina’s 111th anniversary on November 24, 2024 in Ghent. 

Gewina invites authors and supervisors submissions of outstanding Masters theses relating to the history of science, humanities, knowledge, and university history. The prize consists of €750 as well as assistance in preparing the thesis for publication as a scientific article. 

Eligible submissions must be Masters theses concerning science and university history, broadly construed, and must have been authored by students who received their Masters degree from a Dutch or Belgian university between September 1, 2021, and August 31, 2024.

The deadline for submission is September 1, 2024. Submissions should be sent as an anonymized document to office@gewina.nl with the email subject heading, “Thesis Prize 2024”. Please include the author’s name and educational background in the body of the accompanying email. 

The entries will be judged by:

  • Prof. Gemma Blok (Utrecht University, Open University)
  • Dr. Karen Hollewand (University of Groningen)
  • Prof. Dr. Steven Vanden Broecke (Ghent University)
  • Prof. Dr. Raf De Bont (Maastricht University)
